The purpose of “The Big One” CPD seminar, held on August 16, 2025, was to equip architects, students, and allied professionals with interdisciplinary knowledge and design strategies in anticipation of a major earthquake along the West Valley Fault. In line with the UAP’s Mission to serve the members of the architectural profession and the Vision to be a respected, globally recognized organization of Filipino architects, this activity promoted technical competence, social responsiveness, and nation-building through safe and resilient design.
Organized by UAP Diliman, the seminar aimed to strengthen professional preparedness through science-based planning, structural and architectural integration, healthcare facility safety, legal awareness, and long-term post-disaster recovery. It aligns with UAP’s national thrust to promote Justice to the Profession, encourage Visionary Initiatives, and foster Member Empowerment.
The event opened with an invocation by Ar. Zita Hipolito, followed by a unique demonstration-led welcome from Ar. Edra Belga on earthquake response in auditorium settings. The seminar’s program, hosted by Ar. Florencio Sebastian, included lectures from subject matter experts across various disciplines. Dr. Arturo Daag of PHIVOLCS presented an overview of seismology and introduced the updated Atlas on Fault Systems. Engr. John Arvin Manaloto emphasized the importance of soil investigation and collaboration in structural design.
Ar. Shina Salazar-Samoza shared the DOH’s Hospital Safety Index (HSI) and its relevance even beyond healthcare projects. The highlight of the morning was an interactive workshop led by Ar. Bronne Dytoc and Ar. Carlo Bustos, where participants redesigned a five-storey building using principles of earthquake-resilient architecture.
The afternoon session focused on legal responsibility and recovery. Atty. Dominador Bornasal Jr. provided a refresher on professional liability in the context of disasters, followed by Ar. Ramuel Aurelio, who shared case studies reinforcing the value of clear contract documentation. Dr. Nathaniel “Dinky” von Einsiedel concluded the seminar with insights on the architect’s role in post-disaster planning and the need for a proactive, long-term resilience mindset.

The event concluded with heartfelt closing remarks by Chapter President Ar. Lea Manuel and a raffle draw featuring giveaways from the event sponsors.
This joyful segment brought excitement and energy to close out a day of serious reflection and learning. The entire seminar was dedicated to the late Ar. Cristopher “Dean Buboy” Espina—beloved past president, mentor, and pioneer in healthcare architecture—who passed away that very morning. His memory served as a powerful reminder of the profession’s lasting impact and responsibility to both people and place.
